DT Works Limited: Construction Best Practices Manual

This Best Practices Manual reflects DT Works Limited’s ongoing effort to document and standardize our construction procedures across East Africa. Headquartered in Kenya, our company is committed to quality, sustainability, and the use of field-tested methods suited to the diverse climatic and structural demands of the region. This manual is both a reference and a living document—evolving continually through real-world experience and collaboration with our valued partners in architecture, engineering, and project delivery.

The initial version of this manual focused on the fundamentals of moisture management in buildings, with special attention to our use of fluid-applied flashing for window and door installation, ventilated rain screen systems, and best practices for basement construction and retrofits. In this current edition, we have refined those foundational elements and expanded the content to include wall and roof assemblies, with emphasis on managing heat, air, and moisture—key elements of high-performance construction.

To our DT Works team: This manual is intended as a practical guide, not a rigid rulebook. Site conditions will often vary, and adaptation will be necessary. What must remain consistent is the use of sound building science principles to guide all decision-making. When in doubt or facing unanticipated circumstances, always consult with our in-house experts. Also remember: manufacturer installation instructions, architectural drawings, and project specifications take precedence over anything in this manual. Any divergence from the architect’s detailing must be formally approved and documented through SKs, ASIs, RFIs, or other contractual channels.

To our professional collaborators: We share this manual in the spirit of partnership and transparency. The methods and details contained here are the product of extensive hands-on work and ongoing training in building science. While inspired by our regional context, these principles are adaptable and meant to serve as a foundation for shared problem-solving. We recognize that every project is unique, and design responsibility rests with the architect. Our details are starting points—meant to foster dialogue, not to replace design intent. Feel free to draw upon them in your own work, whether or not DT Works Limited is directly involved in your project.

Thank you for your trust and partnership.
