Rooted in African Ecotecture; Powered by Building Science.

At DT Works Limited, we are redefining what it means to build in Africa. Our philosophy is simple: combine the power of modern building science with the wisdom of African vernacular architecture to create buildings that are resilient, efficient, healthy, and climate-responsive. As Kenya and the wider continent face growing environmental challenges, high performance building offers a vital path forward. It is not only about lowering energy use or reducing emissions—it’s about designing spaces that support well-being, adapt to local climates, and use natural resources responsibly. This is climate action through construction.

We believe the future lies in building envelopes that work with the environment, using local materials such as compressed earth blocks, volcanic stone, and sustainably sourced timber. Paired with strategies like natural ventilation, thermal mass, airtight design, passive solar shading, and rainwater harvesting, these solutions form the backbone of structures that are built to last and to serve.

Featured Project: The Living Wall & “A Village for Kids Hidden in the Woods” – Nairobi Waldorf School

One of our most meaningful collaborations was with Urko Sanchez Architects on the Nairobi Waldorf School project, a playful, ecologically responsive “village for children” nestled in a wooded corner of the city. Commissioned by a Waldorf institution grounded in Anthroposophy—a philosophy that embraces deep connection to nature and child-centered learning—the project required construction that was:

Cost-effective (achieving an impressive $250/m² construction cost)

Rapidly delivered, in time to meet the school’s schedule

Temporarily designed, with a planned 10-year lifespan due to a lease agreement

Sensitive to its setting, surrounded by indigenous trees and sloped terrain

As main contractor, DT Works Limited executed the build with precision and care—delivering playful, modular, and naturally ventilated learning spaces that feel rooted in both the forest and the community. From earth-toned finishes and locally sourced materials to the Living Wall, a green façade that breathes and filters the air, this project reflects our approach to ecotecture in action.

Our Broader Commitment to High-Performance Building

Inspired by global benchmarks such as Karuna House and Glasswood Passive House, DT Works Limited adapts these principles to Kenya’s diverse climates—from the humid coast to the cool highlands and arid interiors. Our projects include:

Passive Homes in Karen and Loresho

Eco-Learning Facilities in Machakos and Laikipia

Permaculture-Aligned Housing in Kisumu and Naivasha

Community Architecture grounded in sustainability and equity

We employ systems thinking in every project—treating buildings as interconnected, high-performing organisms. This includes high performance envelopes, efficient mechanical systems, natural lighting strategies, and breathable materials that work together for occupant comfort, energy savings, and longevity.

Why DT Works Limited?
